On the surface of a small, yellow planet, two warriors clashed their swords. Corpses lay in the wheat colored grass around them, blood painting the land a similar shade of blue as the sun that burned above them. Cold wind nipped at their ears, but the adrenaline coursing through them caused them to even barely notice.
The first warrior donned cloth of a sky blue coloration, representing his faction and connection to his people. The second wore a shawl that shared the same golden hue as the vegetation on the planet, showing her dedication to the soil she and her faction walked.
Blades met and sparks flew, more blood was shed and sweat drenched clothes. The two fought for what felt like hours, their dedication to their causes unmistakable. If they hadn't been raised the way that they were, perhaps they would have realized how unfair that this was. This war had been raging for centuries, all because of a foolish prank that an ancient prince had pulled on the other. The true meaning of their battles had been lost to time, with both parties seemingly only continuing on in order to best the other. They claimed it was to honor their chosen prince, but would the princes be happy that their pointless squabble was still affecting their descendants hundreds of years later? No one truly knew.
The only difference between this battle and the rest, was that it was certainly going to be the last. The two groups had thrown all that they had into finishing this, and all that they had was taken. The two warriors were all that were left, and they seemed to be hellbent on joining their comrades in death. Fighting was all that they had ever known, and they couldn't stop now. They didn't know why, but they couldn't.
Another slash, a dodge, a slide, the two were in harmony in their violent dance. They performed for no audience but the azure sun above, shining its light upon them like spotlights on a stage.
Alas, all shows must come to an end.
Neither of them knew who pierced the other first. Perhaps it had happened simultaneously. It would be ironic if that were the case; the war they had fought all their lives would truly end with no winner. They both staggered and collapsed, blood soaking through their armor and splattering onto the earth, completing the gruesome painting that their people had begun long ago. Panting and wheezing, pain shooting through them as they realized that the battle was over for them both.
Perhaps facing the brink of death caused them to finally question what the point of all of this was. All the bloodshed and violence. All the pain and suffering. Why had they gone through this? What were they even fighting for in the first place? Had they truly made the right decision?
The blue knight was the first to speak, his voice carrying the weight of years of hard work and the exhaustion that came with it.
"...Was this...even worth it?" He asked. He hadn't been expecting a response, merely musing to himself on his deathbed. To his surprise, the yellow warrior spoke up.
"...I don't know." She murmured. Her voice was soft, quiet. She sounded young; her words carrying defeat and sorrow for a future she would never have. The blue knight felt a pang in his chest; one that didn't match the pain of his wound.
The duo remained silent for a moment, before the girl spoke again.
"...Will anyone remember us? What...What we did, who we were?" She sounded...afraid. Terrified, even.
The blue knight thought for a moment. How would anyone remember them if there was no one left to do so? Their friends and family all lay around them in heaps, their bodies having long since gone cold and quiet. He didn't know what to tell her.
Eventually, after quite a bit of pondering, he spoke.
"I'll remember you. Wherever I end up after this, I...I won't forget." He turned to her and met her gaze. She seemed surprised for a moment before her expression softened, and she bowed her head.
"Thank you...I'll remember you, too."
With that, the two went silent...and the sun above them collapsed in on itself.
The sudden destruction was quick and came without warning, the light vanishing and being absorbed into the resulting whirlpool of dark matter. A ring of blue formed around the hole, stardust swirling as a new celestial body began to take shape. A head, a neck, a torso, four legs and little paws... Tufted ears, a canine-esc snout, and horns made of the stars themselves. Fur sprouted across the creature's body, dark grey and fluffed out. Blue eyes slowly opened, twinkling like the cosmos itself.
The newly formed Luminite looked around warily, nose twitching as they sniffed the vacuum of space. They felt...somber. Rather than an exciting event, their birth felt more like a tragedy. Their gaze landed on the little yellow planet that they had once watched with wonder, now completely devoid of life. It had been far enough away to escape their supernova's explosion, but the people that had once inhabited it were still gone for good.
The Luminite took a shaky step towards it, their new legs quivering with the effort. They clumsily waddled over, taking a seat near the planet and bowing their head. Tears formed in the corners of their eyes, slowly dripping down their fur and vanishing into stardust as they fell.
They sat there for quite some time, in a silent vigil for the planet they had loved so dearly. There was no one left to sit with the deceased but them, and they intended to take their role seriously. Cycles passed, planets rotated on their axis around other suns in the far off distance. The Luminite wondered if those would become Luminites, too.
Eventually, the Luminite rose to their paws. They pressed their nose to the planet's surface in a quiet farewell, before turning around and trotting deeper into the waiting galaxy. Their paws carried them along towards an unknown destination, fueled by the urge to explore.
Perhaps they would meet other Luminites, and teach them of their planet's culture. The yellow warrior didn't want to be forgotten, and the Luminite would honor that wish just as the blue knight had. While sitting vigil, they had silently promised to never forget the creatures that it had cared for during their time as their sun. They swore to never let their planet and the reason they fell escape their mind, carrying on the lesson that pointless fighting causes more harm than good.
The warriors may not have known why the war started, but the Luminite had. A supposed harmless prank gone wrong, leading to countless battles and deaths that never should have happened. The princes had realized this at the very end of their lives, too. They had died side by side, similar to how the blue knight and yellow warrior had, contemplating the futility of it all. No one had been there to hear their regrets, all except for the sun above.
As the young Luminite walked on, their sorrow slowly gave way to determination. They wouldn't allow their planet's history to ever be forgotten. They considered it their responsibility as their sun to make sure that it lived on through them, even just in stories and tales. Their planet, despite being now lifeless, would forever be a part of them.
"I'll remember you." The Luminite spoke, voice raspy due to never having been used before. They glanced back at their planet, which was now a mere yellow speck in the distant galaxy.
"I promise...I will."
