"Just look by the big tree," Lux huffed, recalling what the stranger had said. He smacked his lips with a yawn, toes curling in the dirt as he pulled himself up with a stretch. "Be a lot easier if we weren't in a FOREST," he grumbled, kicking a rock across the ground before shaking some loose dirt from his speckled coat. He blinked a few times, eyes adjusting to the darkness that had crept up on him. Moonlight filtered through the dense branches, dappling Lux and his surroundings in balls of light. Truthfully, Lux didn't know much about the creature he was hunting, or even the area. The only thing he knew was that he'd heard they were friendly.
And Lux needed a friend.
Lux hadn't always been lonely. There were vague memories of warmth and love, but they were hazy with blurry faces. No matter how hard he tried to remember, Lux always just ended up with a splitting headache and an empty feeling in his gut. Whether his memories were truly gone, or his brain was trying to protect him was a mystery.
He dropped a crude map on the ground, flattening the parchment with his paws. There in the center surrounded by trees was an Owllet. A small path was dotted across the page, the same one Lux had followed to get here. The map wasn't any more helpful than it was previously and Lux's ears shifted back against the thick fur of his nape. He plopped down into a sitting position with a small thud.
Rustle. Rustle.
The sound was sharp and pierced the relative silence of the encroaching night and the fur along Lux's back stood up. He lifted his eyes from the map and peered into the darkness. The moonlight did not grant him much visibility, but it wasn't pitch black. A silhouette emerged from the rustling branches. In the darkness Lux could barely make out what he was looking at. Wings and curled horns, accompanied by a deep call. It was a demon, surely. The shadow loomed across the small clearing before him and Lux found himself scampering backwards, his map forgotten in the dirt. Chest heaving, he glanced around for an escape. He should have been warned!
Rustle. Rustle.
From the darkness leaped a flash of brown and the looming shadow faded away. Much smaller, and certainly much less scary now. The terrifying and twisted horns were tufted feathers, and the demon's wings were feathered and furled at the polite looking creature's sides. Lux took a breath as the Owllet approached him. It screeched again, the sound muffled by the pine cone in it's mouth. Lux, feeling a bit sheepish now, gave the Owllet a smile. And in turn it dropped the pine cone at the Luminite's feet with an excited chirp. "For me?" Lux asked, his brows shooting up. The Owllet nodded, plopping his own butt into the dirt as well.
"Thanks," Lux offered, grinning broadly at his new friend.
