"Are you okay?" the voice asked and Lux's eyes shot open. He flattened his large ears against the fluff along the back of his neck and huffed in protest. "Yeah, yeah," he said, pulling himself to his feet. Injured. Haunted. Whatever, he'd decided. It was training day after all! If Lux wanted to be any good as a warrior he needed to be prepared to fight through anything. He'd had his fill on pilfered candies earlier that morning, courtesy of that other Luminite he robbed. Meher? Lux wasn't worried, he didn't expect to ever see her again. (He was so hopeful. It would be for nothing.) He was ready as far as he was concerned. He had a full belly, some bandaged wounds, and his personal cheering squad was at the ready. Echo, his Owllet, lingered nearby, squawking occasionally with a ruffle of his cream and chocolate feathers. As far as he was concerned, Lux was perfect. It was how he'd gotten his name, after all; he echoed every overly confident thing Lux said about himself.
"So where is this guy?" he asked, turning to the Luminite who had addressed him earlier. They shrugged with a cough that was obviously hiding a smirk. "Good luck," they said quickly before hurrying away to hide their struggle not to laugh. Only when they got sufficiently far away did they collapse to the ground in a fit of laughter with their feet kicked in the air.
Lux furrowed his brow, wondering what all that was about. It was irrelevant, he decided, and after sending a big smile to his Owllet, began to poke around the immediate area. There were a few wooden racks set up, with equally wooden swords set up. They were damaged in places, chipped and chunked from use. Echo fluttered down from the tree in which he'd been preening to poke at the training swords with his beak. He gave one a nibble but gave a disapproving squeak.
"I don't think that's what they're for, buddy."
Echo huffed, emulating the sullen look on his friend's face, and plopped into the grass, folding his wings neatly at his side. "Whoa..." Lux, having moved on from the wooden swords already, noticed another sword. It was real, that was for sure. With a cream and golden hilt. Lux couldn't help but be drawn to it. He reached out a paw, but just before he touched it...
"You have to prove yourself before I'll just hand over a Trainee Sword." Lux flinched, drawing his leg back sheepishly and turning to face the new arrival. Jihao. Lux's eyes went wide, he was suddenly hyper aware of how much stronger Jihao looked than him. But nonetheless, he squared up, bandages and all.
"Well then," Jihao said, readying his own weapon, "show me what you've got."
